5 Expert Plant Care Tips for Flower Bouquets

No matter who they are from, when you receive a bouquet of flowers, you wish their beauty could last forever! Of course, there are ways to preserve them, such as pressing them or drying them upside-down, but before you do that, follow these 5 expert plant care tips to extend your bouquet’s life in its vase.

  1. Make Sure the Vase is Clean
After you choose the vase you want to put your flowers in, it is important that you clean it. Even if it does not appear to be dirty, it is best to give the vase a quick scrub in warm, soapy water because you do not want any foreign substance contaminating the bouquet’s home. After the vase is clean, fill it about one-third of the way up with water.

  1. Stir in the Flower Food
The packet of flower food that likely came with your flower bouquet is important to keep your flowers healthy. Stir in the flower food right after adding the water to the vase. Later, if you think the flowers need another feeding, simply add some sugar to the water.

  1. Trim the Flowers Properly and ASAP

Make sure you take the flowers out of their packaging as soon as possible. Even if you cannot prepare your vase at the moment, at least take a second to unwrap the flowers so that they can breathe until you have time to prepare the vase and finish the process. Later, after your vase of water and flower food is ready to go, it is time to trim the flower stems. First, cut off any leaves that are low enough on the stem to rest in the water. Then, cut the stems about one inch from the bottom, angling the scissors at a 45-degree angle. You’ll want to trim each flower stem individually, immediately placing each one into the water after cutting it.

  1. Keep Them Away from Heat
Dry heat is not good for most indoor plants, and flowers are no exception. Because of this, you’ll want to keep your vase of flowers away from radiators and heaters. It is best to place the vase in a cool place.

  1. Give Them Clean Water to Live in

Your flowers will appreciate a clean environment to live in. You can provide this by changing out the water in the vase from time to time and removing any petals, leaves, or flower bits that have fallen into the water. Not only is this healthy for the flowers, but the clean water makes for a fresher look as well!
