Poinsettias 

Poinsettias are a pretty, red flower that many people put on their porch or in their house for the holidays. This plant is native to Central America, specifically Mexico. The poinsettia was originally used by the Aztecs for things like dyes and cosmetics. The poinsettia was made known throughout the US by a man named Joel Roberts Poinsett, which is why we call them poinsettias today. He decided to take some from Mexico, grow them in his greenhouse in South Carolina, and gift them to his friends. This caused poinsettias to spread all around the United States, and they are still widely used today! 

Holly 

Before holly was used in houses during the holidays, it was considered a sacred plant by the Druids. While other plants usually wilted in winter, holly remained green, and its berries were always brightly colored red. The Druids thought that holly was a symbol of eternal life, and they thought that it had magical powers. They believed that if you hung holly plants in your home, you would have good luck and protection. This caught on, and other people started doing it as well, which is why a lot of people still have holly in their homes today during the holidays.  

Christmas trees

Eventually, lighted candles turned into ornaments and LED lights, but the tradition still revolves around family today.
