3 Common Reasons for Indoor Plants to Begin Yellowing
Indoor plants are a wonderful addition to any household, providing a calmer atmosphere and cleaner air. While they are not typically high maintenance, there are a few common issues people often experience with their indoor plants, one of them being yellowing leaves. Typically, the yellow color of a leaf is an indicator that it is about to fall off. This may be due to the natural aging of the plant, but excessive yellowing and leaf loss can likely be explained by one of these common causes:
Under or Over Watering
This cause of yellowing leaves is first on the list because it is the most common. Many times, when a plant owner over waters their plant, the leaves turn yellow and droopy because the plant is slowly suffocating from the excess water blocking the plant’s access to oxygen. On the other side of the spectrum, if the plant is underwatered, it will try to conserve water by taking it away from the leaves in an effort to survive. This causes the leaves to turn yellow and dry. So, if you notice your plant yellowing, consider adjusting your watering routine and see if that helps.
Cold Breeze
As a general rule, indoor plants do not do well with cool breezes inside the home, especially if the plant is of the tropical sort. If your plant is yellowing and you realize it is near an air conditioner vent or drafty window, move it to a stiller area in your home and see if that helps.
Lack of Light
Everyone knows that plants need light…but how much light? That’s the million-dollar question. Well, if your plant is yellowing more on one side than the other, it could be because the yellow side is not getting as much light as the other side. Try moving the plant to an area that provides light on every side of the plant.
Keep in mind that there are further reasons why a plant can begin to yellow, but these are among the most common. You may have to do some trial and error, but with some time, you can arrive at your solution! Happy plantscaping!
