Plant Specialists in Pensacola Talk About the Butterfly Palm

We love all plants of all shapes, sizes, and varieties and we want our community to love them as well, which is why we are offering some helpful tips for taking care of some of our favorite plants. This month, we’re sharing more about a beautiful tropical palm, the Areca Palm Tree, otherwise known as the Butterfly Palm.  

The Butterfly Palm is best recognized by its long, feathery fronds and can be found lining many of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Native to Madagascar, this palm can grow to upwards of 20-30 feet in its natural habitat. However, the indoor varieties found here in the United States typically only reach 6-8 feet. This growth can easily be managed for smaller, indoor spaces by regularly pruning the tallest fronds.  

Although the Butterfly Palm thrives in tropical climates, this palm prefers sunlight exposure that is bright but indirect. Too much exposure to direct sunlight can cause the fronds to turn a yellowish-green color in the leaves, so it is best to keep this plant in a more shaded spot that is consistently warm (around 70-85°F during the day). Regularly giving the pot a quarter turn every few days will ensure that it is receiving even exposure to sunlight.  

Unlike most indoor plants, palms are very slow-growing and do not require a steady diet of plant food. Instead, we recommend that you only put your palm on a liquid plant food diet in the spring and summer months and keep to a steady watering schedule. When watering your Butterfly Palm, all the roots should be wet, and it is best to not water again until the soil becomes slightly dry.
