Heroman Discusses House Plant Watering: How to Know You Are Watering Correctly

One of the most difficult things for any new plant parent is determining how much and when to water your new plants. Below, Heroman Services Plant Company is providing a few points on house plant watering for all those wonderful new plant parents out there.

What not to do when watering plants

The wrong way to water a plant is to give it little "sips" of water. You will notice plants will not grow much with this method. Even succulents need to be watered the same amount as other plants, just not as often. Make sure you are watering your plants thoroughly each time, no matter what plant type you have.

The right way to water

Okay, so now you may be wondering, what is thorough watering? During thorough watering, you will want to make sure water runs out from the drainage hole at the bottom and soak the soil from top to bottom so that all root balls are saturated. This means if your container does not have a drainage hole, you could be drowning your plant babies. If you have a pot with no drainage hole, you still have options. You can either drill a hole in the bottom yourself if you are the DYI type. Or you can use it as a cachepot, meaning you put the grower's pot directly into the decorative pot you have, hiding the less beautiful but more effective pot with drainage holes.

When to water your plants

Determining when to water your plants is relatively easy, just stick your finger in the soil and feel for a moist area a couple of inches down. If you do not feel any moist soil, it is time to water. If you are dealing with a larger pot, you can put a wooden dowel in the pot to the bottom. Leave it in there for a few seconds, if the dowel comes out moist towards the bottom close to the plant roots, no need to water. If the dowel comes out dry, time to water.

Finally, if you happen to over water where you see water sitting in the saucer your pot is sitting on, you can use a turkey baster to remove any extra water from the saucer.
